The Basics

What Is Telephone Number Porting?

Telephone number porting — sometimes searched for as number portability, porting a telephone number or simply "porting" — is the process of moving your existing phone number from your current network to a new provider, so you keep the same number your customers, friends and family already know. It applies whether you're switching an entire office over to VoIP, porting landline numbers after a house move, or consolidating numbers after a business merger.

In the UK, number portability is protected by Ofcom, which means your losing provider is required to release your number once you've given your new provider the go-ahead. You can read more detail in our guide to how phone number porting works, or our walkthrough on transferring a PSTN number to VoIP if you're moving away from a traditional analogue line.

With the UK's ISDN and PSTN switch-off well underway, porting numbers onto a cloud-based system has become the standard route for households and businesses alike — it's usually simpler, and often faster, than people expect.

Why Bother Porting?

Why Porting Your Number Is Worth It

Getting a new number is easy. Keeping your old one — while switching everything behind it — is what actually protects your business or household from disruption.

📞

No missed calls or lost customers

Customers, suppliers and family already have your number saved. Change it and some calls simply never reach you again — porting means nobody has to redial.

🖨️

Nothing to reprint or update

No reprinting signage, stationery, vehicle livery or packaging, and no chasing directory listings, invoices or your website to update a number everywhere it appears.

Your reputation stays intact

Google Business listings, online reviews and click-to-call ads are often tied to your number. Porting keeps that history and trust in place instead of starting again.

💷

Usually cheaper than staying put

Moving your ported number onto a VoIP line typically costs less each month than a traditional line rental and call charges — see the comparison below.

⚙️

Unlocks modern call features

Once your number is with a VoIP provider, it can gain call routing, voicemail-to-email, mobile apps and call recording — features a traditional analogue line can't offer.

🔒

Protected by Ofcom

Number portability is a legal right in the UK. Your losing provider can't refuse to release an eligible number once you've asked your new provider to port it.

What It Costs

Simple Pricing, Built to Save You Money

Once your number is ported, it runs on a single monthly plan — no separate line rental, and no per-minute call charges to worry about.

Typical BT Line
£44.72/month
  • Standard line rental (~£31.20/month)
  • Plus an add-on for unlimited UK landline & mobile calls (~£13.52/month)
  • Calls charged per minute without an add-on
  • Tied to a physical copper line
VS
T2K Business & Home Line
Your New Line
£12.95/month
  • Unlimited calls to UK landlines & mobiles included
  • No line rental, no per-minute call charges
  • Works over your existing broadband connection
  • Keeps your existing number via porting

That's a potential saving of £380+ a year on a single line — and the saving multiplies across every number on a multi-line business port. Figures based on BT's standard published tariffs as of September 2026 (line rental plus its Unlimited Minutes call add-on); your own costs may vary by provider, contract and location.

How It Works

Porting Your Number in Four Steps

The same process handles a single home landline or a bulk business port — the only difference is the detail we need from you at step one.

Tell us about your number(s)

Fill in the short form below. Residential ports just need your current number and a few details; business ports also cover how many numbers and users are involved.

We check eligibility

We contact your current (losing) provider to confirm the number can be ported, and arrange a Letter of Authority (LOA) where one's needed.

We agree your porting date

You'll get a confirmed date in writing, so you know exactly when the switch happens. Your existing line stays live right up until then — don't cancel it early.

Your number goes live

Calls route through to your new T2K service automatically on the agreed date, typically with well under a minute of interruption.

Porting multiple business numbers?

Bulk number porting is one of the most common requests our team handles — whether that's a handful of DDIs for a small office or an entire number range across several sites. We coordinate directly with your losing provider so nothing falls through the cracks.

  • Single or bulk number ports handled by the same team
  • Works alongside a move to 3CX, Gamma Horizon or Microsoft Teams Calling
  • Your existing lines keep working until the agreed date

Common Questions

Telephone Number Porting FAQs

What is telephone number porting?
Telephone number porting is moving your existing number from one provider to another so you keep the same number after switching. It's protected by Ofcom's number portability rules for both landline and mobile numbers.
How long does porting a telephone number take?
A single landline number typically ports in around 1–10 working days. Bulk business ports with multiple numbers can take a little longer to coordinate, and we'll always confirm a fixed date with you in advance. See our guide on how long porting takes.
Can I port a landline number to a mobile?
Not directly — UK landline (01/02/03) and mobile (07) numbers sit in separate Ofcom ranges, so a landline number can't be ported onto a SIM. Once it's hosted with a VoIP provider, though, you can use a mobile app or call forwarding to use that number from your phone.
Will I lose service while my number is being ported?
No. Your existing line keeps working right up until the agreed port date, and the switch itself typically causes well under a minute of interruption.
Do I need to cancel my existing provider before porting?
No — please don't. Cancelling your old line before the port completes can cause the number to be lost permanently. We manage the handover with your current provider as part of the process.
Can I port several business numbers at once?
Yes, bulk number porting is one of our most common requests, from a handful of DDIs to a full number range across multiple sites. Use the business option on the form above to tell us more.
What is a Letter of Authority (LOA)?
An LOA is a short document confirming you're the account holder and authorising your new provider to request the port on your behalf. We'll send one for you to sign electronically once your request is confirmed.
Can I port my number if I'm still in contract?
Usually yes — porting the number and ending your existing contract are separate matters, though early termination charges may apply with your current provider. We can talk through the options with you.
Do you port both residential and business numbers?
Yes. We handle single home landlines and personal lines through to multi-line, multi-site business phone systems, using the same porting team and process either way.
How much does it cost once my number is ported?
Lines start from £12.95 a month, which includes unlimited calls to UK landlines and mobiles — no separate line rental and no per-minute call charges to track.
